FreeBSD Unix-Compatible Open Source Software

The open source file named pdf417_encode included in the download “tar ball” is a command line program that runs on FreeBSD. This program can generate a PDF-417 barcode as an EPS file. The program is recommended if you need to make a PDF-417 barcode (the variants CompatPDF417, MicroPDF417 and MacroPDF417 are not supported), and plan only to use U.S. ASCII characters for the barcode data. For more information about the PDF-417 barcode technology, you should obtain a copy of the ISO 15438, or ANSI “Uniform Symbology Specifications PDF417” standard, to familiarize yourself with 2D barcode terminology and how the barcodes are constructed.

Downloading Instructions

To install the program:

  1. Click here to download the file “pdf417enc3.9.tgz” (805208 bytes, sum 62669787);
  2. Make a temporary directory (e.g. /usr/tmp/pdf417) and cd to that directory;
  3. tar -xzpf /path-of-downloaded/pdf417enc3.9.tgz;
  4. rm /path-of-downloaded/pdf417enc3.9.tgz;
  5. Read (“more”, or use a text editor) the file “README.amgraf” (you'll also need to read the file “README”).

Pursuant to the open source license, the tar ball contains all source code files. After you have installed the necessary files, if you don't plan to do anything with the source files, you can delete the temporary directory created in step 2. You should keep the README files for reference whenever you prepare your input file for the barcode generator.
